Household Automobile Patterns
Next to spending on shelter ($14,500) Canadian households spend on average annually almost $10,000 on transportation. If depreciation of vehicles and 50 years of vehicle usage time in the household's lifetime are considered, it is evident that the cost of transportation is the most costly household expense. The auto recession has put a dent on the household purchase of new vehicles, but lead to a boom of automotive aftermarket. Understanding consumers' automobile usage behavior will help business gain competitive edge in the service and parts business around the automotive aftermarket.
We analyzed the semi-annual Return-to-Sample Survey of Bureau of Broadcast and Measurement and data mined patterns and key drivers among consumers' automobile usage behaviours. Combining the long term predictors like age, education, culture, life stage and lifestyle with consumers' preference, attitudes and geographic data, we developed nonlinear and non-parametric models and derived propensity scores of consumers' choices and usages of automobiles and services.
